8° e 9° tappa del viaggio della Fiamma Olimpica

E' passata indenne e molto rapidamente. La Fiaccola Olimpica ha fatto tappa in Africa: ha compiuto una staffetta di soli cinque chilometri per le strade di Dar es Salaam, capitale economica della Tanzania.
Appena mezz'ora di percorso nelle mani di ottanta tedofori, applaudita da migliaia di persone. La pioggia battente ha accompagnato il passaggio della torcia ed è stata la ragione ufficiale addotta dalle autorità per la riduzione del percorso da 25 a 5 chilometri.
Unico neo, l'assenza, preannunciata, della più celebre tedofora che avrebbe dovuto partecipare alla staffetta, il Premio Nobel per la pace 2004, la kenyana Wangari Maathai.
Il via alla cerimonia è stato dato dal vicepresidente della Tanzania, Mohamed Shein che ha acceso la torcia per poi consegnarla nelle mani del ministro dell'Unione tanzaniana, Seif Khatib.
Il vicepresidente della Tanzania, che faceva le veci del capo di stato, ha affermato: "Sono fiero che la Tanzania sia l'unico Paese Africano ad accogliere la fiaccola. E' un'opportunità eccezionale per il nostro Paese".
Ultima tedofora, la responsabile dell'organizzazione delle Nazioni unite per le abitazioni (Habitat), Anna Tibaijuka (nella foto) fiera del passaggio della fiamma nel suo paese. "Si tratta di un momento di solidarietà per la Tanzania, l'Africa e il mondo intero, nello spirito delle Olimpiadi", ha dichiarato alla fine della corsa, che si è conclusa in uno stadio costruito dalla Cina.
La torcia ha quindi lasciato il Paese, per dirigersi all’aeroporto di Mascate, capitale del Sultanato dell'Oman, nona tappa del giro della fiaccola ed unica nel mondo arabo.
La Fiamma Olimpica, ieri, ha attraversato la capitale dell'Oman dando il via alla lunga staffetta asiatica verso Pechino.
Il percorso di 20 km, dal centro della città fino alla riserva naturale di Qurum, lungo le strette strade di Mascate, ha visto un alternarsi di 80 tedofori sportivi locali ed il loro passaggio è stato salutato da migliaia di cittadini scesi in strada per assistere all'evento.
I 20 chilometri sono stati percorsi in serata (con inizio alle ore 17), per evitare che i tedofori corressero sotto il sole cocente del giorno, quando le temperature superano i 40 gradi.
Quella in Oman era l`unica tappa mediorientale della torcia olimpica, che questa mattina proseguira` il suo viaggio atterrando ad Islamabad, capitale del Pakistan. Domani la fiaccola percorrera` le vie di Nuova Delhi e Bombay.
Inoltre, nei giorni scorsi, è stata confermata anche la tappa in Tibet, prevista per il 19-21 giugno.
