La fiaccola olimpica di Pechino 2008 è arrivata a Buenos Aires giovedì sera, unica tappa sudamericana del tour mondiale. Ieri la staffetta tra la "fiesta" nelle strade grazie agli 80 tedofori che hanno portato la fiaccola olimpica attraverso le vie di Buenos Aires non c'era Diego Armando Maradona. L'ex calciatore ha fatto sapere che "sarebbe stato contentissimo" di essere stato il primo tedoforo, ma aveva già un impegno in Messico, dove il club Nexaca (conosciuto come "I fulmini") gli tributerà oggi un omaggio alla carriera. Tra i tedofori doveva esserci anche l’ex centravanti della nazionale argentina, della Fiorentina e della Roma, Gabriel Omar Batistuta, che non si è però presentato all’appuntamento con la Fiaccola.
La capitale argentina è l'unica città latino-americana scelta per il passaggio della torcia simbolo delle Olimpiadi di Pechino 2008.
Dopo l'esecuzione degli inni nazionali, prima quello argentino, poi quello cinese e, quindi, dell'inno olimpico, i messaggi del presidente del Comitato Olimpico Internazionale e del governatore di Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macri. A quel punto il velista Carlos Espinola ha ricevuto la fiaccola per percorrere il primo tratto della manifestazione nel quartiere di Puerto Madero.
Per alcuni minuti, mentre transitava per il centro di Buenos Aires, anche se non per l'azione di persone esterne, ma per motivi tecnici, la torcia si è spenta. L'incidente è avvenuto nella zona della Diagonale Norte, dopo che il corteo era uscito dalla Plaza de Mayo.
L'operazione per riaccendere la torcia con la fiamma di riserva è durata qualche minuto, dopo di che la staffetta è proseguita.
Ad accompagnare la torcia, in tutto il suo percorso in territorio argentino, molti componenti della numerosa comunita' cinese.
L'ultimo degli 80 tedofori previsti era la ex tennista argentina Gabriela Sabatini che è entrata, dopo il completamento di un percorso di 13,5 chilometri, nel Club Ippico Argentino, a pochi metri dallo stadio del River Plate.
Lì le cerimonie finali e poi il trasferimento della Fiaccola in Tanzania, ottava tappa del tour mondiale della Fiamma di Beijing 2008.
