Fotofinish a Carpi! A meno di un metro dal traguardo, testa a testa tra Daniele Bennati e Mark Cavendish, due tra i favoriti della 12a tappa di questo Giro d'Italia. Per soli 2 cm "di ruota" il vincitore della tappa odierna è Daniele Bennati, che si riconferma dopo i successi nella terza e nona frazione. Secondo, appunto Mark Cavendish. Alle loro spalle l'australiano Robbie McEwen. La maglia rosa rimane saldamente sulle spalle di Giovanni Visconti, che sarà leader anche alla partenza della 13.a tappa (arrivo a Cittadella) prima che inizino le vere difficoltà del Giro.
La tappa odierna ha percorso l'Emilia Romagna in linea piatta, da Forlì a Carpi, dopo 172 km ed era dedicata a due grandi modenesi come Durando Petri, famoso maratoneta di Carpi, e al mitico Enzo Ferrari. La giornata vive sulla fuga di Dionisio Galparsoro Martinez. Lo spagnolo parte da solo al `chilometro zero` e arriva a guadagnare ben 14 minuti sul gruppo a 125 km dall`arrivo. A metà percorso il ritardo della maglia rosa è di 8`, ma, come da previsioni, è chiaro che l`arrivo sarà una volata di gruppo. Una caduta movimenta il finale di tappa: a 15 km dal termine il gruppo si fraziona e per terra finiscono tra gli altri anche la maglia bianca Nibali, uno dei pretendenti a questo Giro, e il tedesco Zabel, uno dei clienti più accreditati per la vittoria odierna in caso di arrivo in volata. La fuga di Galparsoro finisce a 9 km dal traguardo e iniziano i preparativi per il gran finale. Davanti a tutti si porta la Cavendish, vincitore nello sprint di Catanzaro; gli soffiano alle spalle due clienti scomodissimi, McEwen e Bennati, che tagliano il traguardo praticamente affiancati: per una manciata di centimetri vince l`italiano, che resiste al colpo di reni, in extremis, dato del britannico. Domani tocca all'altra tappa pianeggiante, prima delle fatiche previste per il fine settimana: la Modena-Cittadella 177 km.
